The Hermitage as the General Staff of Russian
Museums: Seminars for Museums of North-West Russia
On 18-22 November, 2002, were held two seminars of the program organized
for museums of North-West Russia by the Hermitage jointly with the Open
Society Institute (Soros Foundation).
Participants of the first seminar, “Museum and Information Space”, were
greeted by Vladimir Yu. Matveyev, Hermitage Deputy Director Exhibitions
and Development. The Hermitage personnel told about the use which their
museum made of information technologies and presented the Hermitage website.
Guests were invited to a workshop where the development of a museum website,
its structure, contents, navigation and interface were discussed.
Taken for a tour of the Hermitage, seminar participants were introduced
to navigation booths and computer education center. Special meeting was
dedicated to the Computer Classroom of the School Center whose personnel
told about multimedia education programs. The last meeting was assigned
to the discussion of the possible use of the Hermitage experience by regional
museums.
The second seminar addressed the experience of the Hermitage Press Service.
Its personnel described their line of business and the use of information
technologies by the Press Service. Special presentations addressed interviews
and press releases, PR projects illustrated by the Hermitage exhibitions
in other Russian cities and interaction with foreign mass media. Participants
were introduced to the Press Service's Annual Report.
The seminars are part of the program “21st Century Museum: New Public
and Cultural Space” devised by the Hermitage for Russian and foreign museums.
Alongside seminars, the program will include exchange visits, joint projects,
exhibitions, academic and popular publications, multimedia programs, joint
Internet site, etc.
